I killed a 'possum last night

I was driving home and came around a curve and there was a largish opossum in my lane. I did not brake, accelerate, swerve or waver as it darted back and forth in the illumination of my headlights. At approximately 60mph I contacted the marsupial with my right front tire with the slightest thump- not enough to trigger the traction control. I could follow it's trajectory by the thumps on the undercarriage of my truck until it passed under the right rear tire causing a slight bump in the rear end that was no more unsettling than a small belch.
I didn't even look in the rear view mirror.

A friend of mine and I once trapped a possum in a trash can, we were in college at the time and a several foreign students, from the middle east, walked by and became very interested as to what we were doing. We convinced them it was giant north american rat, when they looked in to the trashcan at the possum it hissed and they backed off and then walked away eyes as wide as silver dollars. I ended up putting the possum in someones car. I had heard it would crawl up under the dashboard and stay until it died. Don't know if it worked. Ah, good times.

Too bad you were in a truck. If you were in a car, you would have gotten to hear the sick, disturbing crunch of its bones shattering. I heard that once when I ran over a skunk. I drove immediately to a car wash, but my car still stunk for 3 days, like skunk and wild cherry.

Awwwwww.! You should of at least tryed to save him,,,like maybe mouth to mouth or something... Or even taken the little guy to a Vet,,,you might of been able to save him...

They pay people to shoot opossums in my country, they were introduced from Aussie and eat all the native fauna...people go out of their way to run them over.

Glad you are ok Bornyo, the same thing happened to me last week driving through the small town of Spencer, Iowa.I accidently ran over Dewey, the small town library cat.I am so ashamed.

You missed a little bit in your absence Monkey. This thread was started as a response to a douchebags bogus post about killing a little girls dog. The number of responses has been bumped up by the hatred of opossums as well as the hatred of the guy who made the fake post.

Honest, my favorite local park for many years has been Possum Creek.
I was going through South Dakota on a two lane, driving 18 wheels, and hit a raccoon. I looked in my mirror and saw another raccoon looking at his or her dead partner, it was something I've always carried as a dark memory.
Years ago at a different Metropark, my little terrier Pepper Dog chased a baby possum about 20 feet before it turned around and got mean. Pepper Dog retreated.
After several 4th and 5th steps, I've concluded I got my values system from Jed Clampett. Really. Most brilliant thing ever on TV.
That's about all I got concerning possums, other than to mention there are a lot of them in the Dayton sewers.

I almost forgot this one time I got a (bad) haircut at this place that was...open.. and the whole time these three rednecks had a serious, in depth, technical discussion about possum hunting. I gather the city possums are a lot bigger than the ones they hunt, and a possum dog is a very valuable thing.

So, like about 20+ years ago, some friends and I decide to jump the fence at the local zoo and fish a couple of their lakes, we came up with the idea while getting wasted, of course. We pull up to where we're going to jump the fence and they let me out with our gear to wait in the woods while they park and walk. So I get out and run to the woods carrying all these poles and stuff. Being really wasted and having ran I decide to lay down, after a few minutes of laying there I hear something. This possum walks out of the shadows and right past my face about three feet away without any idea I'm there. If you think they're nasty as you're running over them you ought to see one up close. Then there was the time we decided to sneak onto a local golf course and fish and walked right up to a skunk, wasted of course. Man the memories that brings back. "What is that"? "I don't know but it's moving..." "Skunk!!" It took a few joints to get our buzz back..
